USA – Joe Biden to impose new travel restrictions
President Joe Biden is all set to impose a ban starting Saturday on all the non-US citizens entering the country from South Africa to contain the spread of the new variant of the Corvid19 that has been found. Also, the ban applies to the people who have recently been to Brazil, Britain, Ireland and most of Europe.
“We are adding South Africa to the restricted list of countries because of the concerning variant currently present has already spread beyond South Africa,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s principal deputy director, in an interview recently. She later added that this was purely to protect the American citizens and reduce the risk of the new variant being spread.
In the last days in office, Donald Trump announced that a Covid-19 ban on travellers arriving from Europe and Brazil would be lifted but the Biden administration said it would reverse the order due to come into effect on January 26.
The South African variant, also known as the 501Y.V2 variant, is 50% more infectious and has been detected in at least 20 countries. More than 25 million Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the US so far.
