The U.S. is experiencing “almost a vertical increase” in Covid cases as the Omicron variant sweeps the country, but the peak may be only weeks away, top U.S. pandemic advisor Anthony Fauci said Sunday.

Hospital admissions from Covid are rising again in the U.S., and average daily infections are at a record 400,000, Fauci said.

The uptick in Covid19 among the under-50s coincides with a surge in cases among young children and a troubling increase in pediatric hospitalisations.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is considering adding a negative test to recommendations on a shortened isolation period for people with asymptomatic infections, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser said.
