U.K. – Highest daily Covid19 cases recorded as Omicron spreads
The United Kingdom on Wednesday, 15th December, recorded its highest ever cases of Covid19 in a single day. The nation reported 78,610 new cases on Wednesday, about 10,000 cases more than the previous peak in January.
More than 11 million people have now tested positive for the disease in the United Kingdom, which has a total population of around 67 million.
Compulsory mask-wearing has also been extended and work-from-home guidance was reintroduced under the Government’s Plan B to tackle the pandemic this winter.
Omicron is expected to be the dominant coronavirus variant in the European Union’s 27 nations by mid-January, the bloc’s top official said Wednesday amid concerns that a dramatic rise in infections will leave Europe shrouded in gloom during the holiday season.
