Twitter does best memes on Nirmala Sitharaman saying; she doesn’t eat a lot of onions
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is again making the news. This time, it’s because of the claim she said in the Lower house. On Wednesday, during a discussion on the hefty price increase of onions in the legislature, Sitharaman also said she belongs to a community that doesn’t eat lots of onion and garlic.
During most of the legislature, Sitharaman also spoke about measures the government has taken to resolve the price increase of onions. NCP MP Supriya Sule asked Sitharaman, “Why has the output of onion gone through the roof? We’re exporting rice and milk and many other items. Onion grower is a cattle farmer and he really needs to be protected.”
As a result of her response, Sitharaman replied to her eating habits. She said, “I don’t eat a lot of onion and garlic. I’m from a culture that doesn’t have much to do with onion.”
The hike in the costs of onions still had the web producing jokes, but after this comment emerged, # SayItLikeNirmalaTai gained momentum and a meme fest began.
Even the former finance minister, P. Chidambaram, takes a jab today while entering the parliament and wondered, in response to the claim, if Sitharam is eating avocados instead of onions?
