Things To Do In Reno, Nevada
When you think about taking a trip to Nevada, your mind probably jumps immediately to Las Vegas. While Vegas is certainly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, it also overshadows something of a hidden gem, and one of our favorite destinations in the American Southwest: Reno.
Located about seven hours’ drive northwest of Las Vegas, Reno is famous for being “The Biggest Little City in the World”. Sure, this description sounds vague at first, but once you visit, it will actually make quite a lot of sense. The bustling city is set amidst stunning scenery, the same way a quaint mountain town might be; it’s close to the world-famous Lake Tahoe, as well as several national forests. Beyond beautiful surroundings though, Reno also has something fun to offer no matter what you happen to enjoy doing on vacation. You can read on below for some of our favorite options.
Take A Scenic Drive To Lake Tahoe
The beautiful Lake Tahoe is only about an hour away from Reno, making it a great place to visit on a day trip or even just for a few hours in the afternoon. If you visit during he warmer seasons of the year, you can simply explore the Lake Tahoe area and all of its natural splendor. The lake looks like something out of a digitally-altered painting, mirroring the breathtaking Sierra Nevada Mountains that surround the area. And you’re essentially free to hike and explore as you wish – as well as go kayaking, paddle boarding, or even swimming if the weather is nice enough. Whatever your plans, be sure to pack your camera!
On the other hand, if your trip to Reno falls during the cooler months, you can also enjoy Tahoe’s transformation into a snow sport hotspot. There are numerous excellent ski resorts in the area (Heavenly Mountain has been named one of the best U.S. ski resorts), and if you’re staying in Reno you can head out just for the day with relative ease.
Visit One of the Glamorous Casinos
Reno is well known for being a miniature Las Vegas when it comes to its casino scene. There are several casinos in the area, but some are usually favored over others. Eldorado Resort Casino may be one of the most extravagant complexes we’ve ever seen, complete with a massive casino, several high-end restaurants, and live performances. Every inch of this venue is decorated with luxury and style, making simply entering the building an experience in and of itself.
Overall, the U.S. has actually been (gradually) enjoying more exposure to the sorts of online poker games and slot sites out of the UK that have so popularized digital casino activity; it’s becoming something of a worry for Vegas. But this out-of-the-way complex exudes all the best of live casinos, and makes you feel like they’re not going anywhere.
Browse The Nevada Museum Of Art
We like the Nevada Museum of Art in part because the building itself is its own piece of art. Its facade makes it look like the building just dropped in from outer space, and the four-story interior houses countless pieces of art. This museum is also unique by comparison to most other galleries and museums you’ve probably visited in that it is loosely thematic: The main focus of the museum is on how human beings interact with their natural and built surroundings.
Go On An ATV Adventure
Our last recommendation is not for the faint of heart, but is a total thrill for those who are up for it. Reno is set amidst a truly extraordinary landscape, which is wonderful to look at but can be difficult to explore on foot or by car. That’s where the ATVs come in. Some places around town offer rentals, allowing you to go out on your own, while others provide guided tours that are a bit more structured. Whichever option you choose, be sure to wear clothes you don’t care too much about, as riding through the desert will get you quite dirty!
Reno has plenty more to offer in terms of more traditional activities and attractions. There are lovely places to stay, appealing restaurants and bars, and even some wonderful spas. The above suggestions, though, are what make this a true travel gem despite its relative lack of publicity.
