President Joe Biden to expand free rapid testing as Omicron spreads
The Biden administration will open federal Covid19 testing sites in New York City this week and buy 500 million at-home rapid tests that Americans can order online for free starting in January as it tries to tackle the Omicron variant sweeping the country.
An administration official who outlined the plans to reporters declined to say how many free, at-home tests Americans will be able to access through a new website but said they would be delivered through the mail.
The Omicron variant is now the most dominant strain in the U.S., accounting for over 73% of new coronavirus cases less than three weeks after the first was reported, according to estimates posted Monday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
