“1917,” Sam Mendes ‘ First World War drama, was awarded three prizes for best visual effects, film and sound mixing. “The Irishman” by Martin Scorsese received 10 nods, but he unoccupied-handed.
Joaquin Phoenix earned “Joker” as the best actor, while Renée Zellweger awarded “Judy” as the best actress.
Our TV reviewer said that the hostless series this year delivered a catching array of dramatic moments and head-scratching options.
In her opening sequence, Janelle Monáe produced a sharp remark regarding female directors who were noticeably absent from the division of best director.
Steve Martin and Chris Rock walked on stage, offering a monolog, but not naming them hosts.
