Netflix tests new feature similar to Instagram feeds

  • The Extras section will offer a preview of Netflix Originals TV shows or movies
  • It will be similar to Instagram’s main feed that allows users to scroll up and down content

Netflix is testing a new feature on its mobile app. Called ‘Extras’, this new tab will show a gallery of Netflix Originals – TV shows and movies.

The ‘Extras’ tab will replace the ‘Coming Soon’ section located at the centre of the bottom bar. Users will find Netflix Originals placed in a vertical feed under this tab.

Similar to Instagram’s main feed, Netflix’s new feature will let users scroll down and check out each TV show or movie. Netflix confirmed this feature to The Verge saying that it’s a “feed of video extras in our mobile app.”

The Extras section will offer a preview of Netflix Originals TV shows or movies. The previews include trailers and a brief description of the plot.

It will also give users the ability to share these Netflix Original titles directly from the feed to third-party apps like Instagram Stories, WhatsApp, and Snapchat.

There are more options for users to start watching the Netflix title or set reminders.

Extras on Netflix is currently in its beta testing stage and is not available to users widely. It’s still not guaranteed that Netflix will roll out the feature officially for all users.

This feature shows Netflix’s experimentation with social media UIs. Previously, Netflix rolled out ‘Previews’ for trailers.

Similar to Instagram Stories, users can tap to move to the next trailer. Netflix Previews also offers tools for users to add the title to their list or share it on other platforms.
