Mexico – 20 die as metro overpass collapses
Twenty people were killed, including children, and 49 were hospitalised when a railway overpass collapsed onto a busy road in Mexico City on Monday night.
Rescue efforts for potential survivors were paused shortly after the accident, authorities said, because of the risk that more of the Metro overpass and train cars could slam down onto the road.
Photos and video from the scene showed train cars hanging from the collapsed overpass and rescue personnel searching and transporting people away from the scene on stretchers.
The accident happened on the metro’s Line 12, the construction of which has been plagued by complaints and accusations of irregularities. Rescue efforts were temporarily suspended earlier in the night due to concerns over the stability of the subway car, which was still dangling over the road.
