Indonesia : 7.4 Magnitude earthquake hits South Sulawesi
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province, prompting people to evacuate homes and buildings. No injuries or major damage has been reported yet but locals said they felt large tremors.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, estimated the magnitude at 7.7, placing the earthquake at a depth of 5km.
The quake comes just 10 days after the major Mount Semeru volcanic eruption on the island of Java, which killed at least 46 people.
Indonesia, an island archipelago made up of more than 17,000 volcanic islands, is part of the infamous ‘Ring of Fire’. The Ring of Fire is a massive horseshoe-shaped ring encircling the Pacific basin made up of a string of volcanoes and seismic activity.
