India reports a high number Covid19 cases after almost a month
Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 4,092 Covid-19 infections, over 4,000 for the first time since January 6, taking its tally to 2,064,278. Mumbai, meanwhile, reported over 600 cases after 31 days with 645 fresh infections. Currently, 1,74,243 patients are in home quarantine and 1,747 others in institutional quarantine, the health department said in a statement.
India has not seen the virus make a stomping resurgence similar to its devastating “second wave” in Europe and the US and the death rate has been consistently lowering – something that has emboldened many to take increasingly bolder steps outside their homes.
By the middle of last week, India was barely counting an average of 10,000 Covid cases every day. The seven-day rolling average of daily deaths from the disease slid to below 100. More than half of India’s states were not reporting any Covid deaths. On Tuesday, Delhi, once an infection hotspot, did not record a single Covid death, for the first time in 10 months.
Meanwhile, India on Monday recorded 11,649 new Covid-19 cases and 90 deaths in the last 24 hours. With this, the total tally of positive Covid-19 cases in the country touched 1,09,16,589 and the Covid death toll stood at 1,55,732.
