India – Lockdown updates
As cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) begin to show a declining trend in India, several states have decided to ease lockdowns and slowly open up. Many state governments, however, have extended the Covid-19 restrictions with certain relaxations.
Madhya Pradesh: In Madhya Pradesh, some relaxation to start the economic and business activities has been given. However, the ‘corona curfew’ has been extended in all 52 districts till June 15.
Chandigarh: Even as the Union territory has extended curbs till June 9, it has eased certain restrictions in the region as the situation pertaining to coronavirus infection spread seems to be coming under control.
Jammu and Kashmir: The Covid-19 curfew here will now be limited to night hours and weekends only.
Maharashtra government extended the lockdown till June 15 for corporations of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, Vasai Virar, Nagpur – all civic bodies with more than one million population. In the urban areas that are considered as separate administrative units and where the total positivity rate is less than 10 per cent and total oxygen beds occupancy is less than 40 per cent, essential shops can be allowed to operate from 7 am to 2 pm instead of 7 am to 11 am. All government offices will be allowed to function at 25 per cent attendance instead of 15 per cent earlier.
India has seen a drop in cases over the last few days after witnessing a grim global record with 4.14 lakh cases in a day last month. The country now has 17,93,645 active cases, the Health Ministry said. The centre is trying to pace up the vaccination drive after setting an ambitious goal of vaccinating the entire country by the end of this year. The drug regulator has done away with the requirement of India-specific trials in a big move to clear the way for foreign vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna.
