India’s Covid chart continued to show improvement today, with the country recording 58,419 cases, the lowest in 81 days. India, the second-worst hit country, now has 2.98 crore cases. Active cases now comprise 2.44% of the total infections.

Over 27 crore people have been administered doses under the massive inoculative drive which began in January, the government said. More than 5.5 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the age group 18-44, so far, it said.

The Union health ministry said on Saturday that the daily positivity rate in the country has dropped to 2.98 per cent. But, there are a few states where the number of active cases of the disease is still high.

The western state of Maharashtra has been the worst-hit by Covid-19 pandemic since it first struck India. The state has reported highest number of cases, and still leads in terms of active cases of the infection.

Several districts in Karnataka are seeing a significant decline in Covid-19 cases over the past few weeks, due to which the state government has relaxed the lockdown-like curbs imposed to check the spread of the disease. In an order, the government has allowed shops, hotels, clubs and restaurants in districts that have a positivity rate of less than five per cent to operate till 5pm from Monday.

Sources also said that results of ramping up of Covaxin production will start showing in August. With manufacturer Bharat Biotech having begun augmentation, sources said 2.5 crore doses will be available in July. “The revised guidelines, along with enhanced production capacity, will show an accelerated speed as well as accelerated coverage, because in effect vaccine doses are now free for all age groups at government vaccination sites,” a source said.
