India: Guy condemned to death for sexual assault and murder of a kid in Odisha
The Special Court for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) in Odisha on Thursday sentenced a man to death for raping and killing a three-year-old girl.
Keonjhar Town and Trial Judge Loknath Sahu condemned 22-year-old Sunil Nayak to death for rape and killing of the girl after she was taken to the playground in January 2017. The girl’s family wasn’t at home when Nayak, the victim’s son, got her out of the nanny.
The girl’s body was found the following day in the deserted kitchen of the school in the Champua section of the Keonjhar region.
Last week, the provincial government decided to launch 45 faster-track courts to ensure the swift prevention of crimes against women and children. Of the 45 fast track trials, 24 contend with cases related to POCSO and 21 deal only with the case of rape.
Throughout January and June of this year, Odisha reported 1,149 rape cases, including 604 POCSO instances.
