India – A building on fire at Serum Institute, 5 dead
A major fire broke out in a building at the Serum Institute of India(Pune campus), which is the largest vaccine maker in the world. 5 people were killed in the fire and serious damage to the infrastructure was caused.
The fire was caused after some insulation material caught fire during welding, the official said. The under-construction building where the fire broke out is adjacent to the plant where Covishield is being produced.
Pune police officials said that a probe will be conducted in the case, in which probability of criminal negligence leading to death will be probed, along with that of the fire being an intentional act of sabotage. In the initial stage, the Crime Branch of Pune City Police will conduct a parallel research along with the team from Hadapsar police station, which has control over the area.
The fire however, has not caused any problems to the production of the Covishield vaccine. “We have just received some distressing updates; upon further investigation we have learnt that there has unfortunately been some loss of life at the incident. We are deeply saddened and offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed,” Serum CEO Adar Poonawalla tweeted.
