Hung convicted in a month’s Unnao rape trial: Said by DCW chief Swati Maliwal appeals to the Centre, UP Govt
Swati Maliwal, Chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) appealed to the Center and the Uttar Pradesh state government on Saturday to hang the accused in the Unnao rape case after the victim died in New Delhi on Friday after being burned to death by those accused of sexual assault.
“I apply to the government of Uttar Pradesh and the national government that the criminals should be hanged within a month in this situation,” Chief Swati Maliwal told ANI.
She also challenged the lack of security provisions for the survivor of the rape and wrote a letter to the Uttar Pradesh DGP on the same issue.
In a tragic sequence of events, the Unnao rape survivor passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Friday following a cardiac arrest, Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital reported. She was airlifted to the hospital on Thursday, where she was receiving emergency medical treatment for her body will burn.
Dr. Shalabh Kumar, Head of the Department of Burns and Plastics at Safdarjung Hospital, announced that the victim of the Unnao attack sustained a cardiac arrest at 11:10 p.m. The physicians tried to revive her, he said, but she could not live, and she died at 11:40 p.m.
She was placed on the ventilator at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi earlier that day. The hospital surgeon said she was “unconscious” but her “vitals” were all right.
On Thursday, the rape victim in Unnao, about 60 km from the state’s capital Lucknow, was set on fire by those convicted who were on parole.
The attack on the survivor of the rape has caused a massive outcry in the country, demanding strict punishment for the guilty parties. The incident resonated in Parliament, with Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu guaranteeing the House that he had spoken to the UP Chief Secretary on the matter.
The five men who attacked her in March of this year were accused of being behind the crime. They were all charged, the police added. Three of them are accused of sexually assaulting her.
As per sources, the guilty parties brought the woman to the fields outside the village and poured her in kerosene before lighting her on fire. The charges are made on the basis of a statement made by the complainant. While the main suspect confessed to the police after the attack, the police raided the homes of others as they fled the place after setting her aflame.
In March, the victim lodged an FIR against two people from her father’s village in Unnao, alleging them of raping her. One of the suspects was later arrested by the UP Police but was released on bail last week. The other suspects were on the lam as well.
