Ghana : 17 dead in a crash
At least 17 people were killed and 59 injured in an explosion in western Ghana when a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine collided with a motorcycle, the minister for lands and natural resources, Samuel Jinapor, said on Friday.
It’s almost like a ghost town now,” Sedzi Sadzi Amedonu, a senior official from the country’s disaster management agency, told the AFP news agency. He said about 500 houses were affected – some of which were completely destroyed – in Apiatse between Bogoso and the village of Bawdie.
Local police released a statement saying that a “preliminary investigation has established that a mining vehicle carrying explosives… collided with a motorcycle resulting in the explosion”. Police asked surrounding villages to open their schools and churches to accommodate any additional casualties.
