Europe : WHO warns Covid19 deaths to cross 2 million

The World Health Organisation’s Europe regional office Tuesday said the 53-country area could see another 700,000 Covid19 deaths in the next four months if vaccination efforts are not increased and could cross 2 million.

It warns of “high or extreme stress” in intensive care units in 49 countries by March, as Europe battles surging cases

According to WHO data, Covid-related deaths increased last week to nearly 4,200 a day, doubling from 2,100 deaths a day at the end of September. The rise in Europe was being driven by a combination of the highly contagious Delta variant, insufficient vaccination coverage and the easing of measures such as mask wearing and physical distancing, WHO said.

WHO said more than 1 billion vaccine doses had been administered in the WHO European region and 53.5% of people had completed their inoculation programme, but added that the figure “hides wide differences between countries”, with some populations less than 10% vaccinated and others more than 80%.
