Europe : WHO advises use of booster shots for protection amid Omicron surge

The World Health Organization’s European head on Tuesday warned countries to brace for a “significant surge” in Covid19 cases as Omicron spreads, and advised the widespread use of boosters for protection.

The surge will push health systems towards the brink of collapse, the World Health Organization’s top official in the continent has warned.

WHO Europe regional director Hans Kluge said at a press conference in Vienna, that 89% of those with confirmed Omicron infection in Europe reported symptoms common to infections caused by other coronavirus variants. These include cough, sore throat, and fever. “The variant has mostly been spread by young people in their 20s and 30s in the region,” he added.

WHO headquarters in Geneva has advised that vaccine boosters be saved for the most vulnerable, but Kluge urged people to “boost, boost, boost.”

The WHO approved another coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday, from U.S. firm Novavax.
