Europe : At least 10 dead in a hospital fire in North Macedonia
At least 10 people have been killed in a fire at a makeshift hospital treating Covid-19 patients in North Macedonia.
Tetovo’s deputy fire chief Saso Trajcevski said the fire spread rapidly inside the building after oxygen cylinders exploded in rooms in the hospital. The prosecutor’s office ordered forensic experts to identify the remains. A number of people were injured, though the exact figure wasn’t immediately available.
Only 19% of the city’s residents were vaccinated in July, which health officials said caused great pressure on hospitals in August.
North Macedonia has reported more than 180,000 cases of Covid-19 and 6,153 coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.
