Covid19 : Pfizer confirms that its pill appears effective against Omicron
Pfizer said on Tuesday that its experimental Covid19 pill appears effective against the Omicron variant.
The experimental antiviral pill Paxlovid is effective against the Omicron variant that is spreading rapidly across the world. In clinical trials, Paxlovid showed almost 90% efficacy in preventing hospitalisation and death in high-risk patients, Pfizer stated, replicating the results of a smaller-scale trial announced last month.
Pfizer submitted data to the U.S. FDA last month, asking for emergency use authorisation of the drug. Rival – Merck & Co has asked for emergency use authorisation of its antiviral pill molnupiravir. But that drug only reduced hospitalizations and deaths in its clinical trial of high-risk patients by around 30%.
