Covid19 : Pfizer booster shot approved by Canada
Health Canada has approved a booster of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for people 18 years of age and older. The booster is intended to help people who’ve had their first two COVID-19 vaccine doses to maintain their protection against the virus over time.
Booster shots are designed to help people maintain their immunity over time, though Health Canada notes that evidence continues to show that being “fully vaccinated” with two doses provides protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death, including against the Delta variant of COVID-19.
NACI (National Advisory Committee on Immunsation) says, however, that most people outside those higher-risk groups don’t need a booster at this point because there is no evidence of waning protection over time against severe COVID-19 in the general population.
Moderna has also applied to Health Canada to approve its COVID-19 booster shot, which uses a smaller amount of vaccine than the first two doses.
