Covid19 : Germany surpasses 100,000 deaths
Germany’s disease control agency said it recorded 351 additional deaths in connection with the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, taking the total toll to 100,119. In Europe, Germany is the fifth country to pass that mark, after Russia, the United Kingdom, Italy and France.
The spike in Germany comes as Europe has re-emerged as the pandemic’s epicentre, with the continent battling sluggish vaccine uptake in some nations, the highly contagious Delta variant, colder weather moving people indoors and the easing of restrictions.
Vaccination rates in Germany have stalled at 68% of the population, far short of the 75% or higher that the government had aimed for. Older people who got vaccinated early in 2021 are also seeing their immunity wear off, making them vulnerable to serious illness again, and authorities have struggled to meet demand for booster shots.
