Covid19 cases in France break European daily records
France is seeing a ‘tsunami’ of Covid19 infections, with 208,000 cases reported over the past 24 hours, a new national and European record, health minister Olivier Veran said on Wednesday.
The roughly 1,600 clubs were ordered shut on December 6 for four weeks as officials hoped to avoid a wave of infections prompted by holiday travel and festivities, fuelled by the highly infectious Omicron variant.
France already has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, at 90% of the eligible population.
Aside from France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Malta also registered record numbers of new cases on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the average number of daily Covid19 cases in the United States hit a record 265,000, according to data kept by John Hopkins University. The previous mark was 250,000 cases per day, set in mid-January.
