Kuwait on Thursday, confirmed 1041 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in 24 hours, taking to 18,609 its infection tally, the Health Ministry said.

The Health Ministry also reported 5 more deaths from COVID-19, taking to 129 the total such fatalities in Kuwait.

325 are Indians, 211 are Kuwaitis, 177 are Egyptians and 139 are Bangladeshi, Currently 181 patients are in intensive care Health Ministry spokesperson Dr. Abdullah Al-Sanad said.

A Kuwaiti medical team succeeded, in a short time, in developing a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) solution to be used for coronavirus tests. This new technique, fully developed by Kuwaitis, has “excellent” diagnostic results which would have a qualitative leap, said Dr. Salman Al-Sabah, head of Surgical Department at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital.

#Kuwait Ministry of Health announced today, Wednesday, that 320 cases recovered from of those infected with coronavirus (Covid 19), bringing the number of cases that recovered 5205 cases.

The laboratory and radiology tests and tests have proven that these cases have recovered from the virus. 

Tax on Expats remittances returned to the limelight again as Kuwaiti ministers called the parliamentary committee to include this in the agenda.

Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Ministry of Social Affairs denied media reports on what was reported by some news media outlets on Wednesday as “untrue” that the Kuwait Ministry planned to scrap the sponsorship (Kafeel) system.

Migrant workers transfer about 4.2 billion dinars annually from Kuwait, he added, citing figures from Kuwait’s Central Bank. Imposing tax on this transfers will have a role in improving state revenues and diversifying sources of income, he said.

Expats draw about 70 percent of the entire population of Kuwait as of the close of June 2018, i.e. a population of 4.7 million people.

Kuwait has imposed a total curfew in the country till May 30 to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. During the total curfew everyone is permitted to walk in their own residential area without the use of an vehicle from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.


Kuwait said that there will be a gradual opening keeping in view of precautionary measures after the period of a total lockdown.
