China : New covid cases pose threat to Beijing
The Chinese capital Beijing on Tuesday reported two more Covid19 cases of both the Omicron and Delta variants, taking the total to three, as the government said city officials must “operate under the state of emergency” during the three weeks remaining before the Winter Olympic Games begin.
The province reported 102 new locally transmitted symptomatic cases on Tuesday, up from 68 a day earlier. This came as 171 new symptomatic cases were detected across China, 127 of those locally transmitted, the National Health Commission said.
Organisers intend to hold Beijing 2022 in a closed loop system which will only be accessible for Games participants a plan that has remained in place amid the rapid spread of the Omicron variant. As outlined in a Games playbook published in December, the closed loop system will encompass venues, official hotels and the event’s own transport service.
