China : Millions more under lockdown amid Omicron concerns
Nearly 34 million people in China are now fully or partially locked down with authorities scrambling to contain a spreading Covid19 outbreak with cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant reported among the infected.
The variety of individuals ordered to remain house rose to 33.6 million after a 3rd Chinese language metropolis, Anyang, within the central Chinese language province of Henan was locked down on Monday. New instances prompted the lockdown of 5.5 million residents within the metropolis of Anyang on Monday night.
Beijing is on high alert as it prepares to host the Winter Olympics next month, sticking to a zero-Covid strategy of targeted lockdowns, border restrictions and lengthy quarantines.
Elsewhere, Tianjin a major port city just 150 kilometres from Beijing has barred people from leaving without official permission, ordered the testing of all 14 million residents, and cancelled trains into the capital.
