China : At least 12 people killed in an explosion in central China’s Hubei Province

The blast took place at about 6:30 am local time in the Zhangwan district of Shiyan city. Media reports said a market in the district was hard hit. Eleven people were killed and 37 others injured in the explosion which has destroyed several buildings.

The blast ripped through one of the city’s vegetable markets that was filled with shoppers and local residents eating breakfast, an eyewitness told state-run Global Times.

The blast came a day after eight people were killed and three others injured when toxic methyl formate leaked from a chemical handling facility in the southwestern city of Guiyang.

The exact number of casualties is still being verified as the search and rescue is underway. The cause of the accident is under investigation, according to the city government, which said on Chinese microblogging platform Weibo that it is organizing rescue efforts.
