CAA Updates: Rahul & Priyanka Gandhi were stopped entering Meerut by Local Cops
On Tuesday, Congress leading figures Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra refused to enter Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut as they were on their way to meet the kids of the victims who lost their lives in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and suggested the National Citizens ‘ Register (NRC).
The Gandhi brothers, stopped by the police near the police station in Partapur, relocated to Delhi.
Police announced that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had been served with a notice that said section 144 of the CrPC had been placed and that Meerut’s situation was critical.
Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) forbids four or more persons from gathering.
“Because of their appointment, they were told they would be held liable for any deterioration in the district’s law and order circumstances,” the declaration says.
Were both told that if they actually visited the district in safety, the police would have no opposition. Both of them went back home, it said.
Since they were detained at the Meerut border, the Gandhis begged the cops to be allowed to visit the families together with another member of the Congress.
“They ordered the police to give us control, but they showed no order to stop us and ordered us to come back,” stated Rahul Gandhi.
Although 18 people were killed in UP protests, last week in Meerut alone five expired.
Senior state Congress leaders Imran Masood and Pankaj Malik spoke with the families of the victims as the Gandhis returned to Delhi.
Priyanka Gandhi visited the families of two victims who died in Bijnor earlier on Sunday.
