Australia – Perth bushfires destroy at least 59 homes
A wildfire burning north-east of Perth on Australia’s west coast has destroyed at least 59 homes and is threatening more, with many locals across the region told it is too late to leave. More than 7500 hectares have been destroyed so far. The fire began yesterday and raged through the night causing a 17,000-acre blaze.
Hundreds of firefighters have worked through the night in Western Australia in extreme terrain and condition trying to contain the blaze. Hundreds have been forced to spend the night in emergency accommodation after evacuation orders to protect life.
Residents subject to the five-day Covid lockdown were also told to dismiss the stay-at-home orders and to leave their properties if they believed they were under threat. This advice included close contacts of the quarantine hotel security guard who has tested positive and anyone else who had been told to self-isolate.
Three evacuation centres have been set up. Roads have been closed on Tuesday afternoon due to safety reasons. About 2750 homes and a number of businesses are without electricity due to the fires.
