Australia : Augusta-Margaret River bushfire burn out of control
Firefighters were battling to contain two bushfires in the Western Australian tourist hotspot of Margaret River on Thursday evening, with locals urged to “leave now” amid the out-of-control blazes.
The Bussell Highway remains closed in the Augusta-Margaret River region as bushfires continue to burn out of control. More than 5000 hectares have so far been burned, with 150 firefighters on the ground trying to contain the blaze as it approaches Karridale.
The extent of the damage to the region and its many tourist attractions is yet to be revealed as the fires continue to wreak havoc on the landscape.
An emergency warning remains in place for people in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and bounded by Redgate Road to the north, Bussell Highway to the east, Chapman Road and Hamelin Bay Road West to the south and the coast.
