Afghanistan – Powerful explosions outside a high school kill at least 50 people
The explosions took place as students were leaving the building on Saturday, with pictures on social media showing abandoned school bags in the street. Most of the victims were girls, a ministry of education spokeswoman said.
The explosions are believed to have been caused by a car bomb and two improvised explosive devices planted in the area. At least 150 are also reported to have been injured by the blast, which happened in the Shia-majority neighbourhood of Dasht-i-Barchi.
Sayed Ul-Shuhada hosts classes for boys in the morning and for girls in the afternoon. The attack occurred around 4 p.m., as the girls were leaving and the streets were packed with residents preparing for the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Angry crowds attacked ambulances and workers trying to evacuate the wounded, said health ministry spokesman Ghulam Dastigar Nazari.
